• Does Printmaking have a future in Art Academy Education?

• What is the current status of printmaking and how is it perceived?

• What strategies have been employed by colleagues to ensure the future of printmaking within art academy curriculum?

PRN Chair, Nick Devison will invite panel members and the audience to discuss issues concerning the current and future status of printmaking in higher education.

A paradox exists in the perception of print practice in the UK. Print as a medium for creativity and research is thriving, whilst traditional print resources in art education institutions are under increasing threat of cuts and closure. The perception of printmaking within art education varies widely across cultural and creative contexts. Print workshops may be regarded as of vital importance or viewed with indifference and contempt. Print as a medium may be celebrated for its contribution to image making, regarded as a democratising force and recognised at the cutting edge of digital research, and in other contexts it may be ridiculed as outmoded, overlooked as reprographics, demoted to a service area, regarded as an ‘easy option’ for weaker students or perceived as an inferior ‘cousin’ to fine art practise. The panel and audience will be invited to exchange experiences and suggest strategies for the successful integration of print media within art education and research.

This discussion will provide a rare opportunity for international colleagues to locate issues of common concern and to suggest strategies for the successful integration and promotion of print media into Art Academy education and research. Our aim is to create an exchange of ideas and comparative experience between the panel and colleagues and the audience. The aim of this exchange is to gain an understanding of the status and practise of printmaking on an international level and to forge links and supportive partnerships between colleagues and institutions.

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS

PRN in conjunction with Anglia Ruskin University will make a publication entitled RE:PRINT. This will record the reflections of international colleagues on the current condition and future of printmaking in art education.

You can submit an abstract via the BLOG link at www.printresearchnetwork.org.uk All abstracts submitted will be published on the PRN website. The PRN will shortlist a number of these abstracts and successful contributors will be invited to develop their abstracts into a 1,200 – 1,500 word essay. These will be included in a PRN publication RE:PRINT that will record the reflections of international colleagues on the current condition and future of printmaking in art education.
